Finding Jane Fairfax ~ Review

Cover art for Finding Jane Fairfax by Robbin J. Peterson shows woman standing on an overlooking cliff.
Finding Jane Fairfax
By Robbin J. Peterson

You know Jane Fairfax from Jane Austen's Emma. You know that Emma wasn't her biggest fan or even her bestie. But what was her story before she left the Campbells, before Miss Campbell became Mrs. Dixon. And how did she and Frank Churchill meet and form a secret attachment? Well, Finding Jane Fairfax will give a glimpse into the lives of two young people who were an important part of Highbury Society even when they didn't call it home.

This was an interesting read. Jane never felt she deserved the life she was living with the Campbells. The Campbells were a loving family who treated Jane as if she were part of their family. The problem was that Society didn't accept her or her situation. She knew that her only hope for the future lay in taking a position as a governess.

Frank felt unwanted and cast off by his father, as his Aunt and Uncle Churchill raised him. And by raising, he was under his aunt's disapproval almost constantly. His friends were too lowly; standing up for the defenseless was beneath him. In short, his aunt was raising him to be a kowtowed snob. And as for his future wife, his aunt would choose her and mold her into a replica of herself.  I didn't like Frank's Aunt Churchill in Emma but in Finding Jane Fairfax she is so much worse, making Lady Catherine de Bourgh seem positively docile.

The characters were well-developed, as was the setting. I appreciated how aspects of Jane's letters to Highbury were worked into the story. Overall, this was a well-written and engaging book. And as anyone who is familiar with Emma knows how Frank and Jane's story ends, but this book ends before either of them returns to Highbury.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Jane Fairfax knows she is truly fortunate. Most orphans face lives of hardship, whereas she was adopted by doting surrogate parents who elevated her place in Society and loved her as their own. Yet even they cannot shield her from the grim realities of life without a suitable marriage. In moments of despair, Jane comforts herself with a well-worn memory: that of a young man whose kind words when they were children once soothed her heartbreak. But now that boy has grown into a dashing gentleman―and their lives could not be more distant.

Frank Churchill is a prisoner of his station. His inheritance is held in the balance by his demanding aunt, and the weight of her expectations is suffocating him. But when a chance encounter brings the lovely Miss Fairfax back into his life, he discovers what it is to truly live. As the pair secretly become acquainted amid the confines of Society’s strict rules, their friendship blossoms into love. But in a world ruled by unyielding traditions, endeavoring to build a life together would mean inviting a scandal that would shake the very foundation of the ton.

An Unlikely Proposition ~ Review

An Unlikely Proposition
Unexpected Seasons #2
By Roselyn Eves

Imagine being a widow at seventeen years of age. Well, Eleanor Lockhart finds herself in just such a position. Not only is she a widow, she's finished her year of mourning after a mere month of marriage. Yikes!!!!

But her husband's death has left her with means, and she means to enjoy life a little and have some fun. Her late husband's nephew and heir has other ideas. If Eleanor marries, her inheritance then goes to her dear, loving nephew-in-law. He is so concerned at her widowed state he is determined to help her find someone to become husband number two, and the sooner, the better. After all, he can certainly make better use of her money.

But first, Eleanor needs a new companion, one who won't steer her into a new marriage. Enter Thalia Aubrey, a young woman with poetic tendencies. A friendship between the two young women soon forms.

This is a lovely and delightful Regency read that finds a young woman having to navigate a new period of life. But she's determined to keep her independence, an independence afforded her by her late husband. But she'll have to figure out how to thwart those who are after her inheritance (namely her late husband's nephew). There are heroes and villains, fake engagements, and discovered loves. And they all end in a tangled mess that has a most satisfying conclusion.

This an enjoyable read that, though written for the young adult reader, can easily be enjoyed by most, especially if you are a fan of Regency Romance. Highly recommended for a quiet afternoon or a long weekend in your favorite cozy corner.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide an honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
A standalone companion to An Improbable Season, this Regency romance ― perfect for fans of Bridgerton ― is about following your heart, pursuing your dreams, and falling head over heels in love.

Eleanor did not come to London to be proper and boring. After the death of her husband and a year of mourning, the seventeen-year-old wants nothing more than her independence and to have a little fun. She’s hardly looking to remarry, despite pressures from her late husband’s nephew, who is keen on obtaining her inheritance. Eleanor quickly devises a plan that includes a fake engagement. What’s not a part of the plan? Falling for a dashing, quiet man outside of her social circle – a man who is not her betrothed. Can she survive the Season with her heart and her fortune intact?

Thalia is determined to begin afresh after a disastrous first Season in London. No romantic distractions, but only her work as a poet and newfound companion to Eleanor. Determined to get her poems published, she struggles to be taken seriously as a female writer. As the spring progresses, Thalia does not expect to take interest in a man from her past (a man who is engaged to her employer, no less!), but some feelings demand to be felt even if the timing isn’t quite right.

Rosalyn Eves's An Unlikely Proposition is a transportive Regency drama that captures the sparkle of London, the thrill of friendship, and the swoon of new love.

The Ladies Rewrite the Rules

The Ladies Rewrite the Rules
By Suzanne Allain

Diane Boyle is more than a little surprised when two eligible bachelors call on her home. Widowed and young, she finds to her surprise and displeasure she has been included in an exclusive list. And her fortune and marital status have found her a place among other similarly situated ladies. Worse the list was a directory for younger sons to find a lady of means who could provide the financial foundation of a potential marriage. Oh, no!

But Diane, who has been enjoying her freedom, is not about give it up for some fortune hunter. And she's determined to let author of this Bachelor's Directory know just how she feels about. And she is going to warn the other ladies on the list that their new found popularity has a nefarious reason. What follows is delightful and enjoyable Regency-era read.

Though set in the same time-period as her previous books Mr. Malcolm's List and Miss Latimore's Letter the voice is unique. I think there are fewer humorous situations in this book than the previous ones but there are still lighthearted moments. This is also a story about discovering yourself. The ladies had allowed the rules and expectations of society and family to shape them into a mold but by making an effort to control their futures and their fortunes they allowed their true, hidden selves to emerge, much like a butterfly.

I loved watching the story unfold. And even the gentleman whom Diane felt to be the villain in the whole directory debacle - Maxwell Dean proves to be more than she expected. The Ladies Rewrite the Rules is a story of friendship, second chances, romance, and self-discovery. Perfect for anyone looking for a clean reading Regency era Romance. Come along on this respectable flaunting of society's expedition in another standalone read from Suzanne Allain. You won't regret the lighthearted feel once you open the book.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

From the author of Mr. Malcolm's List comes a delightful romantic comedy set in Regency England about a widow who takes high society by storm. Diana Boyle, a wealthy young widow, has no desire to ever marry again. Particularly not to someone who merely wants her for her fortune.

So, when she discovers that she’s listed in a directory of rich, single women she is furious, and rightly so. She confronts Maxwell Dean, the man who published the Bachelor’s Directory, and is horrified to find he is far more attractive than his actions have led her to expect. However, Diana is unmoved by Max’s explanation that he authored the list to assist younger sons like himself who cannot afford to marry unless it’s to a woman of means.

She gathers the ladies in the directory together to inform them of its existence, so they may circumvent fortune hunters’ efforts to trick them into marriage. Though outraged, the women decide to embrace their unique position of power and reverse the usual gender roles by making the men dance to their tune. And together…the ladies rewrite

Kissing Kate ~ Review

Kissing Kate
Hearts of Cornwall #4
By K. Lyn Smith

Sometimes, finding love is difficult for unexpected reasons, and for Ben and Kate, it is all about missed opportunities. Ben tried in his youth on several occasions to steal a kiss, but something always prevented him. And Kate was unaware of his earliest attempts, though had she known...

This book was a delight to read. The village of Newford is putting together a production of Much Ado About Nothing. Kate, having given up on her dreams of a future with Ben, is willing to consider other men in the village. And Ben fears that his cousin maybe her choice. But to win Kate's heart means he'll need to do more than try to steal a kiss from Kate. He'll need to admit the truth and expose his heart.

I found it interesting how much of the story centered around the production. The building of the set, painting the canvas backdrops, the practices - so much work. But though that was the central event, it was by no means what the book was about. Rather it was the catalyst.

This was a sweet story that fans of clean reading Regency era Romance will want to move the the top of their TBR List. I highly recommend it without any reservations. This was the first book by K. Lyn Smith I have chad the pleasure of reading, but it won't be the last. The may be the fourth book in the Hearts of Cornwall series but it can be read as a stand-alone title.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

“Benedick Kimbrell attempted to steal his first kiss from Miss Catherine Parker in the perfectly imperfect spring of 1808. But his hopes, then and since, were larger than fact.”

A LADY’S UNSPOKEN LONGING

Kate Parker is resolute in her quest for marriage, seeking a dependable match among Newford's eligible bachelors. But behind her composed demeanor, Kate’s heart holds a stubborn affection for her less-than-dependable friend and an unspoken longing for a kiss that was never claimed.

A ROGUE’S LOST AMBITION

Years ago, Ben Kimbrell harbored ambitions, chief among them a kiss from Miss Kate Parker. Fate, though, had other plans. Now, his heart is weighted by family tragedy, his pain concealed behind a carefree charm. His reputation as an aimless rogue is well-earned, but beneath the façade lies a man who yearns for more.

AND A HEART WELL-GUARDED

When Kate sets her sights on Ben's dependable cousin, a man who fits her expectations if not her heart, Ben can no longer stand idly by. His efforts to save her from a loveless match find the two of them paired together in a village production of Much Ado About Nothing. Tasked with crafting the enchanting sets for their town's inaugural performance, their undeniable affection finds the perfect stage to blossom.

But for their love to flourish, Ben must reveal his true self and confront the shadows of his past. Can he find the courage to unlock his heart before it's too late?

Kissing Kate is a heartwarming best-friend romance about finding the courage to choose happiness and the healing power of love. Set in the charming seaside village of Newford, each book in the Hearts of Cornwall series stands alone.

Something Borrowed ~ Review

Something Borrowed
A Cornwall Brides Novel #3
By Rebecca Connolly

Years ago, Gage Trembath had his heartbroken when the woman he had planned a future with married someone else. But he has decided to move past his broken heart and marry. A love match isn't in his future, but he feels he's found a woman to suit - Honora Berkeley.

Honora is a woman despised. Her parents have never forgiven her for not being born a son or for being born at all. Her only moments of peace are when her parents are gone living their own lives. Convinced that she will be forever trapped in this meaningless life of rejection and ridicule, she is more than a little shocked when Gage makes an offer for her hand. And even more shocked when he doesn't rescind the offer after a meal with her parents.

Knowing Gage will never love her, Honora agrees to his offer. But the past has a firm grip on her, convincing her she'll never be enough. But Gage being Gage is determined to help Honora find herself, the self that has been buried beneath the lies that have ruled her life.

As Honora discovers herself, she makes friendships that allow healing and show her that love is as much a choice as it is a feeling.

This is the third book in the Cornwall Brides series and while reading the book in order is best, one can read this book as a standalone title. The characters are engaging, and one can connect with them as they work through their hurts and fears. Because fear is most definitely a force in this book - fear of rejection, fear of never being enough, fear of loss. And then there is love and its power to heal and overcome fear, but only if it is allowed to take root and grow. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to fans of Regency era fiction.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book in with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book

Forsaking all others…

Gage Trembath is getting married. He is the only one who knows it, but the statement is
true, nonetheless. The woman he had once loved has been married elsewhere for a
time, and he can put off his own marriage no longer. The woman he has chosen to
marry, without love, is sensible, quiet, musical, and amenable, which should enable him
to have a good marriage and a content life. That is all he wants now, and Honora
Berkeley makes the most sense.

Honora cannot believe that a handsome and wealthy man like Gage has any interest at
all in marrying her, even without love. She certainly has very little to recommend her,
but escaping her life of criticism and abandonment is something she cannot resist. But
what about the woman Gage had once loved? The one who was perfect for him and the
one who made him determined to abandon love? Are his feelings for her truly gone?
Will Honora ever have his affection along with his respect?

Is a convenient, sensible marriage what Gage wants? Or will his capacity for love reignite under Honora’s influence?

A Brilliant Match ~ Review

A Brilliant Match
The Earl's Sisters #1
By Jennie Goutet

Lady Dorothea Rowlandson is determined to make a match this season. She needs to if she hopes to save her family from themselves. Her father's death the previous year delayed her debut into Society and she will do everything possible to ensure her younger sisters success with her own successful marriage. And then her brother as a 13-year-old earl is most definitely in need of her help.

Miles Shaw is in need of a wife with a large dowry. His estate is in shambles and the only way to save it is with an influx of funds. And he is determined to let his heart do the choosing for him. And the lady who catches his eye is Lady Dorothea Rowland.

Dorothea is determined that her heart not be turned by anyone. And Miles Shaw is not on her list of eligible men. Unfortunately Miles is most persistent and her heart refuses to listen to her head and its logical dictates.

A Brilliant Match is a delightful series debut. Dorothea's has misconstrued her place and duty to her family. She is determined to have everyone fall into the plans she has set into place. But the first thing to go awry is her young brother's early arrival in London, but as the Earl her brother is equally determined to make his feelings known on matters he deems important. I think my favorite moment comes when Miles confronts Dorothea concerning her view of her family and her perceived limitations regarding them. I loved getting glimpses of her sisters and their personalities and look forward to better getting acquainted with them at a later date (additional books in the series).

I think what is most telling is how Dorothea allowed her father to shape her and her views of others. This is the driving force behind her decisions and choices. And considering how she viewed him, extremely interesting. I will admit Dorothea was hard to get to like. She had moments that made one feel a connection and then the moment was gone. While I did like Miles from the beginning. He was a caring and kind person. He went out of his way to make Dorothea's family feel that they mattered, that they were important just because they were alive. While this is a work of fiction and an enjoyable one at that, it is also a study of the human heart and mind. What makes one do a certain thing and not another.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

A love match would not do.
She would make an advantageous match—a brilliant match!

At the age of 19, Lady Dorothea Rowlandson was practically on the shelf. Had she not suffered her father, the earl’s, untimely death weeks before last year’s season, she would surely by now be a married lady—the established wife of an illustrious peer.

With such a regrettable delay, time was ever more of the essence if she wished to secure her own future and that of her sisters.

Miles Shaw holds an encumbered estate. It is only logical, therefore, that he commence the London Season on the hunt for a well-dowered wife. His personal code of honor requires he be upfront about this goal, so that he deceives no one. And as he fully intends to love and cherish the wife of his choosing, he will naturally bring as much to the union as he receives. After all, he is a landed gentleman with no shortage of charm.

When chance forced Miles and Dorothea to partner one another for the first dance of the first crush of the season, Fortuna could only have been in a funning mood. To have fostered so unsuitable a connection was nothing short of absurd. For what could a peer of the realm’s daughter and a gentleman of no consequence, with his pockets to let, possibly have in common?

The Lord and the Lady Astronomer ~ Review

The Lord and the Lady Astronomer JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for
The Lord and the Lady Astronomer by Alissa Baxter,

The Lord and the Lady Astronomer The Lord and the Lady Astronomer
 The Grantham Girls #3
 By Alissa Baxter

Abigail Grantham is beyond pleased when her uncle, Lord Longmore, invites her to aid him in his newest astronomical endeavor. Abigail will  be helping her uncle and his neighbor, Viscount William Rochvale chart the night sky. While Abigail is more than happy to lend a hand, she hopes to observe a comet.

William never expected to be intrigued by Lord Longmore's niece, but   Abigail is not only intelligent but beautiful and she shares several of the same interests that he does.  A potential romance seems likely, until Wiliam's less than suitable, flirtatious cousin Gerald Burnby decides to pay her particular attention. But Abigail, though drawn to Gerald"s looks and lively personality has been warned away about a potential suit from the rakish man by both her Aunt Longmore and cousin Henrietta.

What follows is a series of unfortunate misunderstandings that may stand in the way of everyone's future happiness. And add to it a bit of intrigue - mystery always makes everything better, except when there are misunderstandings about it.

This was a fun read as the youngest Grantham sister gets her chance to shine in her chosen passion - astronomy. If you love clean reading regency romance - here is a new addition to your Fall TBR list. Bump it to the top and curl up in a favorite corner - it's that good.

Can wishing upon a star ever come true?

Abigail Grantham has always taken a keen interest in astronomy since her brother Sir John Grantham enlisted her aid as a young girl to keep records of his astronomical discoveries. Abigail is delighted when her uncle, Lord Longmore, invites her to stay at Longmore Hall in Buckinghamshire as he needs her assistance to compile a star chart.

When Abigail arrives at the Hall, her Aunt Longmore introduces her to local society. However, Abigail also spends a great deal of time in her uncle’s observatory, viewing the night skies alongside her uncle’s neighbor, fellow astronomer William, Viscount Rochvale.

Lord Rochvale is intrigued by Abigail, and when he discovers that they share an interest in ancient buildings and Roman history, he contrives to become better acquainted with her away from her uncle’s observatory, taking her to places of archaeological interest with a view to winning her heart. But the astronomical project they are working on makes courtship difficult, and William’s plans are further frustrated by his rakish cousin Gerald Burnby, who becomes a frequent visitor to Longmore Hall, seeking out Abigail too.

After a valuable Roman urn disappears from Longmore Hall, a series of mysterious occurrences unravel, presenting a puzzle Abigail has no idea how to solve. However, when events escalate into peril, Abigail discovers that it is the night sky that holds the secret to the missing urn—as well as to her stolen heart.

To Win Her Kiss
The Brookshire Brothers #2
By Miranda D. Nelson

Maggie York is about to go to London, the only problem is that her elder brother insists that it be now during the Christmas season. Not that she has a problem with being in London mind you, she just worries about her two younger sisters who will be without any family during this time.

Matthew Reed, Maggie's London neighbor, has no excitement about London or his ordered stay there over Christmas. But there are expectations, and his father is insistent that he do his duty and represent the family at this time. Even more upsetting, his father expects him to seriously apply himself to finding a wife.

Two more different people could not be expected to form an attachment, much less a friendship. But when Maggie finds herself in an entanglement, she needs Matthew's assistance in freeing herself. Slowly the two form a neighborly understanding over their shared hedge. Though, in all honesty, Matthew is a big grouch most of the time, and his manners in society lack big time. But somehow, when Maggie most needs his help, he offers it.

Matthew makes it clear he will never love. Unfortunately, his declaration just might be the thing that breaks Maggie's spirit and her heart. Can a curmudgeon change his mind and not only find love but win it in return? Matthew is determined to do all he can after getting embroiled in a scandal that has London Society's tongues wagging.

This is a sweet story set during the Christmas season. Can love be found after a marriage of convenience? This is a story of second chances and new beginnings. I have to say Matthew's former friends are quite the troublemakers. This is the first book by Miranda Nelson that I have read, and look forward to reading the rest of this series. The few glimpses I got of Matthew's brothers, I really look forward to learning more about them.

Though there are ups and downs, overall, I'd say this is a book that leaves one with a feel-good frame of mind. So if you want a good clean read with a hint of scandal, some family drama, and lots of Christmas fun, you'll want to read To Win Her Kiss

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
If he was going to ruin her reputation, he might as well make it clear that was what he was doing.

Matthew Reed would rather be anywhere but London this Christmas, and nothing but his duty to his father could keep him there. Though he anticipates a dreadful holiday of forced socialization, he does not expect his animated neighbor who is as beautiful as she is aggravating. As he attempts to navigate London society while keeping himself protected from his past, he begins to question whether everyone is as self-serving as he supposed.

On the other hand, Maggie York could not be more excited to reenter society, and at Christmas no less! Though confused by her brother’s increased sway over her, she is determined to enjoy herself. She soon finds herself just as determined to know her neighbor better, a gentleman who is as surly as he is intriguing.

When an unwanted marriage proposal makes Maggie scramble for another solution, Matthew’s unexpected idea may be her best chance. As Christmas draws nearer, Matthew and Maggie must brave society and rely on each other to find their happy ending.

Children of the Shadows ~ Review

Children of the Shadows JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for
Children of the Shadows by Erica Vetsch,

Children of the Shadows
Children of the Shadows
Thorndike & Swann Regency Mysteries #3
By Erica Vetsch

Detective Daniel Swann has to fight for his inheritance, which should have been his all along. But he must be silent so as to not upset the aristocracy, this includes not making public his intentions to ask for Juliette Thorndike's hand in marriage.

With her parents again called away on a mission, Juliette is told to consider her future. Does she truly want to be an agent for the Crown? Or has she succumbed to the excitement and thrill of doing something daring? With orders from her parents her immediate future is looking rather boring. Until rumors of missing street urchins are heard. Could Juliette do something to get to the answers of these whispered concerns? And could this provide her with an excuse to spend time with Daniel?

As with the previous two books in the series, there is an abundance of mystery. The issues involving Daniel's past and his claims to his rightful inheritance add  new complications to the lives of those closest to Juliette. As Daniel's past, present, and future all come to a point, he finds himself being pulled in different directions, even as he faced the possibility of breaking not only his heart but Juliette's. My only complaint with this book is that it is the conclusion to the series. I highly recommend this book and the series. If you love a good Regency era whodunit look no furthet.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Christian Regency Mystery

Detective Daniel Swann and debutante Juliette Thorndike once again team up to solve a dangerous mystery--while trying to keep their growing romance secret.

Someone is preying upon the street children of Regency London. They seem to think no one will notice when urchins go missing--and even if they are noticed, who will care?

Daniel needs to do something about the missing children. But with recent revelations about his past and an unexpected, somewhat unwelcome inheritance to deal with, this is a terrible time to dive back into the seedy underbelly of the crime world. Nevertheless, he's still a Bow Street runner, and his partner Lady Juliette is sensitive to the plight of these wayward youngsters. They're on the case, searching shadowed alleys and coal-drenched streets to find the missing.

But the tangle of expectation and the dynamics of power cannot be easily ignored, even if there are children in danger. When Daniel's past threatens to overwhelm his future, he will need a miracle and the help of his friends to both apprehend the villain and unravel his tangled family web. And it may be that his new responsibilities demand that he leave the children of the shadows to their terrible fate--or lose everything.

Erica Vetsch's popular Regency mystery series concludes with a bang, sure to satisfy readers who have hung on every page since book one.

Garden of the Midnights ~ Review

Garden of the Midnights
By Hannah Linder

Twenty plus years ago he was threatened with the truth, a truth he wanted buried. And now he has to face what he had tried to avoid.

William Kensley has never wanted to be someplace but Rosenleigh Manor. But when accidents suddenly start befalling him he must confort the ugly truth - the accidents are no accident. Could someone be trying to kill him? But why? Believing the truth behind his unknown father could hold the key, he sets off to learn what he can.

What he learns will shatter his world.

Isabella Gresham is expected to marry well, her father has expectations for her. But Isabella has expectations as well, and giving away her heart isn't one of them. When she meets William there is something between them, something that will bring her an unexpected joy and enjoyment of life. But circumstances being what they are prevent even a thought of romance.

There is danger that stalks them both, and unless they can discover the truths long buried it may destroy them both.

This was a excellent read from Hannah Linder. This is the first book have read by her, though I will admit to have two of her other books in my TBR pile next to my bed. Guess which books are moving there way up the stack.

This book was a wonderful blend of Suspense, History, Romance, and Inspiration. Both Isabella and William have been brought up in a web of lies. Lies that when one strand is pulled free starts to unravel all around it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something new.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

BOOK DESCRIPTION
The accidents are not a matter of chance. They are deliberate. As English
gentleman William Kensley becomes aware of the danger at Rosenleigh Manor, he
pleads for the truth of his past from the only man he can trust—until that man is
murdered.

As the secrets unfold into scandal, William’s world is tipped into destitution, leaving him
penniless and alone. His only comfort is in the constant friendship and love of
Isabella Gresham. If he does not have their nonsense at the seashore, their laughter,
their reckless adventures, has he anything at all?

He should have known that would be ripped from him too. When a hidden foe arises
from their acquaintances and imperils Isabella’s life, William may be the only one willing
to risk his life to rescue her. But even if he frees Isabella from her captors, will he still
have to forsake her heart?

Some sacrifice everything for love. Others sacrifice love for everything else. In this
haunting tale of rigid social prejudices and heart-aching regrets, the greatest decision of
their life will be determined in the garden of the midnights.
